Trish Foundation’s Hearts and Minds Ball 2009

  Research stars at the Ball

MS research was the star at the Trish Foundation’s Hearts and Minds Ball at Hilton Sydney on 19th September.

Iconic researchers, including Guest of Honour Professor James McLeod, featured on the video and in person and Jeremy Wright, Executive Director MS Research Australia gave a powerful presentation on Australia’s contribution to the Worldwide effort to solve MS.

Jeremy Wright spoke of Professor John Prineas and Dr Michael Barnett’s findings, which is a new paradigm and a profound shift in the way the world is looking at MS, opening up a huge opportunity to understand and treat the root cause of the disease.

On the video, Dr David Booth acknowledged the Trish Foundation’s contribution and said, “It has been very exciting. There has been dramatic progress. For so many years we only knew one gene increased the risk of MS. There was all that time when we couldn’t nail anything.”

The growing rate of discoveries and sense of optimism in the research community most definitely gave great hope to the people with MS in the Ballroom.

A poignant moment of the evening was the presentation of MS Research Australia’s inaugural Ian Ballard Travelling MS Research Fellowship by Katie Ballard and Natalie Mort to the recipient, Associate Professor Fary Khan, who travelled especially from Melbourne.

Other shining stars at the Ball were our professional and entertaining Master of Ceremonies, Channel 7’s Mark Beretta, the world-renowned beautiful music of Sydney Ensemble, Toni Powell, an inspirational person with MS who kept the audience spell-bound with her magnificent soprano renditions and was acknowledged with a deserved standing ovation, Australia’s talented rising star Tom Jordan who gave a sensational performance and multi award winning band, Jonah’s Road who wowed guests with their sizzling performance. All, together with our skilful Auctioneer Craig Marshall, Century 21 Cordeaux Marshall Gordon, donated their valuable time and made a fantastic contribution to the success of the Ball.

The Patron of the Trish Foundation, Dr Brendan Nelson, fresh from the announcement of his prestigious overseas appointments, gave a stirring speech encouraging those in the Ballroom to generously support the Trish Foundation.

Special guests Barry and Rosemary O’Farrell, Ken and Wilma Rosewall and John and Gwen Coombs were warmly welcomed. The fight to solve the mystery of MS is truly bipartisan.

“The Trish Foundation has now raised over $1.8 million. Our modest goals at inception have exploded into something we could never have imagined. This would never have been possible without the incredible and generous support we are privileged to receive,” said Foundation Chairman Carol Langsford.

“The success of our Hearts and Minds Ball and our raising over $100,000 in difficult economic times is due to so many people and organisations. To everyone who contributed, including of course, our generous major Corporate Sponsors and donors, our profound appreciation. We could never have done it without you.”
